1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL COUPE/ROADSTER #113.044-12-015940. (Stock #3946.) The “Pagoda Roof” Mercedes-Benz SL was built in various models from late 1963 until early 1971. With a fuel-injected 6-cylinder engine, it fit in between the 4-cylinder 190SL and the famous 6-cylinder fuel-injected 300SL, both of which were discontinued upon the introduction of the new 230SL . Over the years, the engine size of the SL was increased from the 230’s 2.3 litre engine, through to 2.5 litres and eventually to 2.8 litres. Our car is one of those late cars and was sold new in Southern California where it was serviced on schedule at Mercedes-Benz dealerships in La Jolla, San Diego, Encino and Hollywood and every service stamp is recorded in the original service booklet, still present along with all other manuals. The car moved to Florida where it was part of a basically static collection until 2013 when the owner brought the car out of hibernation, performed extensive servicing (receipts are also present) and drove it a bit prior to selling it to us. We then sold the car to a local (Bernardsville) collector where the car joined a great collection and lived in a climate-controlled garage on his estate, being used only in the best weather conditions. Finished in gorgeous Signal Red (body and hard top)with as-new black leather and black convertible top, the car is equipped with all available options: 2- tops, automatic transmission with floor shift, air conditioning, tinted windshield, leather interior and the top-of-the-line Becker “Mexico” signal seeking AM-FM stereo. 94,477 miles. $92,000.
