1968 JAGUAR XKE SERIES 1&1/2 COUPE. Chassis #1E35016. Engine #7E15492-9. (Stock #3827.) The Jaguar XKE “fixed-head coupe” is generally acknowledged to one of the most fabulous-looking modern sports cars ever built; an example of the coupe has been on display at The Museum of Modern Art for years. The Series I cars were built from 1961 until 1967; the Series II cars from 1968 until 1971 and the Series III cars from 1971 until 1974. When changing from the Series I to Series II cars, there were some cars built in late 1967 and early 1968 with some elements of each series; these are now referred to as “Series 1&1/2” cars. Our car is one of those rare coupes with the small grill opening, original above-bumper tail lights and 9:1 compression engine of the Series I and uncovered headlamps, “butterfly” toggle switches and twin carburetion of the Series II. The 4.2 litre, twin cam, 6-cylinder engine carried through the late Series I and all Series II cars including all Series 1&1/2 cars. Our car was sold new to a New Jersey resident, Patrick O’Shea, who kept the car until his passing at which time his wife sold the car, then with 79,833 miles, to a neighbor, Arthur Stanert. In 2010, Mr. Stanert sold the car to another neighbor, John Groom from whom we purchased the car in 2012, then with 80,751 miles. We then sold it to a local enthusiast from whom we have now had it returned to us. Finished in Signal Red with black leather and chrome wire wheels, the car is in excellent condition throughout and drives extremely well. Equipment includes original and rare factory air conditioning, tinted glass, twin outside rear view mirrors and the original “Pianola” AM-FM radio along with factory chrome wire wheels. Original tools and manuals accompany the car along with complete provenance and service records. 82,525 miles.
