1971 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SEL “6.3” SEDAN #109.018-12- 004996. (Stock #3879.) Mercedes-Benz returned to the greatness of yesteryear when they developed “the executive road racer, the 300SEL “6.3” sedan. The car was built as a 2-ton luxury long- wheel base sedan with the 6.3 litre engine of the “600” limousine stuffed under the hood. The result was an almost limousine-type ride with a 137 mph top speed and acceleration of 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and 0-120 mph in 31 seconds. It was known as the fastest production sedan in the world in its time. The car made its U.S. debut at the Laguna Seca race course in California. A legendary figure in Mercedes-Benz history—Rudolph Uhlenhaut—was on hand to demonstrate the car’s superlative road-holding ability and maneuverability as well as, of course, the car’s most impressive power and speed. “Car and Driver” stated: “This automobile is the most stimulating, desirable 4-door sedan to appear since the Model J Duesenberg.” “Road and Track” called the car simply “The greatest sedan in the world.” Priced at a substantial premium above the otherwise top-of- the-line 280SE “3.5” convertible, it was the most expensive car in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, except for the “600” from which the fabulous engine was obtained. Our car is an absolutely fabulous example of the last year of production of the “6.3” and is magnificently finished in the classical German color of Brilliant Silver with fabulous original black leather and flawless tiger-walnut cabin trim. Options were very minimal on 6.3’s but our car is optioned with the optional electric sunroof and console- mounted automatic transmission shifter. A complete mechanical servicing-- including the air suspension—has been completed within the past 1,000 miles. The original owner’s manual is present. 29,262 miles.
