1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL COUPE.ROADSTER # 113.044-10—015193. (Stock #3964.) The “Pagoda Roof” SL was an acclaimed design by Pail Bracq and was built in various models from late 1963 until early 1971. With its 6-cylinder fuel-injected engine, it filled the vacancy left in 1963 by the 4-cylinder 190SL and the famous fuel-injected, 6-cylinder 300SL . Over the years, the engine size of the new SL was enlarged from 2.3 litres through 2.5 litres and eventually, in 1968, to the final iteration, the 2.8 litre engine of the 280SL. Ours is one of those late production cars and, unusually, it is fitted with a 4-speed manual transmission. It was purchased from its home in San Francisco in 1997 by a fellow who then took it home with him to Los Angeles. While there, the original Horizon Blue paint was starting to show its age, so he had the car completely stripped and repainted in the original color. It was found to be completely free of any rust or damage during that process. Following almost 20 years of California ownership, he brought the car with him to New Jersey when he moved here. The car is complemented by a body-colored detachable hard top and dark blue interior and convertible top. It is in beautiful condition inside and out. 105,677 miles. $92,000.
