1968 MERCURY COUGAR “XR-7”
2-DOOR HARDTOP # 8F93F510293.
(Stock # 4055.) In 1967, the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford Motor
Company introduced Mercury’s own “Pony Car,” the Mercury
Cougar. More luxurious (and more expensive) than Ford’s sister
car, the Mustang, the Cougar was a big success for Mercury. It was
fitted with disappearing headlamps in the distinctive horizontal
grill, sequential rear turn signals which were taken from Ford’s
Thunderbird and a very distinctive and elegant pillarless 2-door
hardtop body design. For the buyer who wanted even more luxury
and European flavor, Mercury offered the “XR-7” model. A driver
of the XR-7 would look at a simulated woodgrain dashboard with a
complete array of black-faced competition gauges and a full set of
toggle switches, have an lighted console overhead and be treated to
leather upholstery instead of the standard vinyl. Our car, absolutely
gorgeous in deep Augustus Green with beautiful original tan
leather, was ordered with a most unusual selection of options: 302
cubic inch V-8 engine with a 4-speed manual transmission, a “Power
Transfer Axle” ( posi-traction differential) sports console with
clock, power disc brakes, power steering, “Whisper” air
conditioning, AM-FM/8-track, 4-speaker stereo system, tinted glass,
deluxe rear seat belts and front shoulder belts, styled steel wheels
and undercoat and glaze. The purchaser traded-in his 1954
Mercedes-Benz on the Cougar, paid $4,430.78 for his new car--in
1968 dollars--and kept a notebook of records and documents
including the original order sheet, invoice and window sticker. This
rare car has been kept in astounding condition throughout and must
be seen and driven to be believed. 135,516 miles. (fewer than 3,000
miles per year.) SOLD!
