1968 LAND ROVER SERIES IIA 88 BASE.
(Stock #4375.) The Original Land Rover, introduced in 1948, was the first model to have the iconic Land Rover shape we know today. The Land Rover Series II was the first upgrade from the original Series I. Our Series IIA 4X4 is another upgrade with minor cosmetic changes and was offered in a 88 inch standard wheelbase or a 109 inch extended wheelbase. Ours is an 88, with its 2-door and opposed rear seating area. Finished in Poppy Red with black interior and beige soft and side curtains which, as seen in many safari movies and photos, roll-up to the convertible top and offer splendid visibility. More specifically, ours is referred to as the “Series IIA 88 Military Soft Top”. It was designated "1/4 ton" in British military service with availability as a "general service" vehicle with 12v electrics or a "fitted for radio" vehicle with 24v electrics. Ours is built to “general service” specifications with a 2.25 litre, 4-cylinder engine, 4-speed manual gearbox and 4-wheel drive with “high” range for normal driving conditions and a “low” range for virtually any other road, or off-road, use. It is fitted with aggressive 16” Michelin “X” radial tires (including one mounted on the bonnet as a spare) and a very effective overdrive unit and has had an electric power steering system fitted for ease in getting in and out of close parking and tight situations. This was the personal “driver” for a pre-eminent U.S. Land Rover specialist and, as such, drives as you would expect. Its original British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate is present and confirms the colors, numbers, ownership history, a build date of August 15, 1968 and a dispatch date of September 6, 1968. 75,392 miles.
